New Prefect of Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments
Pope Francis has appointed Robert Card. Sarah, 69, as the new Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments.
Hitherto, Card. Sarah, from Guinea, has been the head of the Pontifical Council “Cor Unum”.
Not long ago, I posted here about Card. Sarah’s remarks concerning the poor.
Cardinal Sarah, citing Benedict XVI, told CNA that “charity is very linked with the proclamation of the Gospel, and doing charity is not only giving food, giving material things, but giving God too. Because the main lack of man is not having God.”
Also, he seems to have seen through the machinations of a certain element active during the recent Synod of Bishops on the family regarding homosexuality.
Cardinal Robert Sarah, president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, emphasized to CNA Oct. 16 that “what has been published by the media about homosexual unions is an attempt to push the Church (to change) her doctrine.”
“The Church has never judged homosexual persons, but homosexual behavior and homosexual unions are grave deviations of sexuality,” the cardinal, who is from the west African nation of Guinea, added.

I think it was precisely this sort of input from Africans that Card. Kasper feared during the Synod.

Something tells me this is a case of “keeping your enemies closer.” Strategically, the progressives want to prevent the African bishops from aligning themselves with western Traditionalists, as their forces, if combined, would be positively lethal to this rabid Neo-Liberalism. After Kasper’s gaffe, moving against the Africans openly would be too transparent, even for the likes of Pope Francis, and drive them straight into the arms Tradition. Better to have them tied up with the status quo, with as many non-critical curial positions as possible in the lead-up to the 2015 Synod. Can Cardinal Sarah – and his brother Bishops – be bought in this manner? Cardinal Arinze – a man whose piety I do not doubt – fell for it when he was made head of the CDW by JPII. Time will tell, I suppose….

“Even among the baptized and the disciples of Christ, there is now a sort of creeping apostasty’, a rejection of God and the Christian faith in politics, in business, in the ethical and moral realm and in the post-modern Western culture.” “We involuntarily breathe in fully teachings, which are against the people, and produce a new politics, which has an effect of erosion, obliteration, destruction and serious aggression, slowly but constant..”
“A humanism without God coupled with a heightened subjectivity, which are ideologies that are now promoted by the media and extremely influential and financially powerful groups, who hide behind the guise of international aid and even operate in the Church and in our charitable organizations” said the Cardinal..” For the Church, the Christian values that guide it, and the identity of charitable Church activity are not negotiable.”
“Any ideology that is contrary to the divine teaching is rejected, any economic or cultural support, which is linked to ideological constraints which contradicts the Christian image of humanity is to be rejected.”

One possible caution, SA
Wickipedia reports that on “Sept. 1st, 2010 Sarah criticised Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s call for Islam to become the religion of all of Europe, labelling it “disrespectful to the Pope and Catholic Italy”.
“To speak of the European continent converting to Islam makes no sense because it is the people alone who decide consciously to be Christian, Muslim or to follow other religions”.

What do you think, is it due to our being sensitized to the negatives of emphasizing “religious freedom” over the importance of declaring Christ the King, and the Catholic Faith the Only means of Salvation (so often and elequently spoken of by Louie Verrecchio on his Harvesting The Fruits blog)? or does this statement lack that Catholic sense in favor of the more indifferentist -just as long as they’re free to choose, that’s what matters most idea, and call for a little more caution regarding Cardinal’s orthodoxy?
