Too many negative emotions, especially with the l’affair Uncle Ted and Rod Dreher not “letting go”, so today, your humble blogger brings a good news post. And as we hear about all those seminaries, in the “conservative” sub-set of the post-conciliar church, some good news might be helpful.

Aside, notice how the seminaries of the dissenting ordinaries haven’t been named?

Anyways…

Oh yea, and DISSENTERS will be used from now on to classify the non-Catholic elements in the post-conciliar church.

When Catholicism is taught correctly, we get MASSIVE conversions.

Hell, even when it is not taught correctly, you still get conversions.

Actually, when PHILOSOPHY is taught, you get conversions to the Catholic Church.

You can even “research yourself” into Catholicism just by reading protestant and agnostic sources. (as per above video PS It’s old but worth a re-viewing.)

Ok, one more: when you listen to Dr. Jordan Peterson, you will eventually convert to Catholicism through the Jungian/Piagetian route. (see here – got to watch to whole video to find the Catholic reference. Hint: has to do with Confession.)

So below, and for your information, a re-post from ChurchPOP about what happens… or rather what happened with well taught humanities… yes, HUMANITIES programs. They have the side effect of making converts to the Catholic Church.

Enjoy and have a great mid-summer weekend!

The Amazing Humanities Dept. that was Shut Down After Too Many Students Converted to Catholicism

This is crazy!

FOCUS missionary Ethan Stueve recently tweeted about an amazing story: in the 1970s there used to be a humanities program at the University of Kansas that got shut down because too many of its students were converting to Catholicism.

Really.

Here’s the story:

Three professors, Dr. Dennis Quinn, Dr. John Senior, and Dr. Frank Nelick, ran a program called the Integrated Humanities Program at the University of Kansas from 1970 to 1979.  A “great books” program that started with the ancient Greeks and led students on a journey up to the present, the motto was Nascantur in Admiratione, translated “Let Them Be Born in Wonder.”

“Students weren’t allowed to take notes, although the professors didn’t mind if they knitted,” Dana Lorelle wrote about the program. “They taught students the state song of Kansas, took them star gazing, spoke Latin out loud and introduced the freshmen and sophomores to classic literature and poetry. […]

“The professors, noticing that the students had no skill in formal ballroom dancing, organized an annual waltz. They took students to Ireland and Greece. They told stories, required the students to memorize poems and spoke of callings rather than careers.”

The program grew super fast, from 20 students in 1970 to 140 in 1971, and 186 in 1972.

But then the conversions started happening. By one estimate, over the 10 year course of the program, more than 100 students decided to join the Catholic Church.

Alums of the program include: Archbishop Paul Coakley of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, Bishop James Conley of the Diocese of Lincoln, Dom Philip Anderson, abbot of Our Lady Of The Annunciation of Clear Creek Abbey, and Dr. Robert Carlson, one of the three founders of Wyoming Catholic College.

As to why the program led so many young people to the Church, Archbishop Coakley has said, “You put people in touch with the true, the beautiful and the good and let the Holy Spirit work.”

Under mounting pressure from both parents and other professors, the university launched an investigation to see if the professors were illegally proselytizing in their capacities as public university professors.

And even though the investigating committee found “no evidence that the professors of the program have engaged in such activities in the classroom,” the university decided to shut down the program anyway.

Of course, all of this raises a question: if three professors at a state school were able to do this… then what are we doing at our Catholic universities?

When You Have The ONE TRUE FAITH, Ecumenism Is Solemn Nonsense…

… and so is FrancisChurch along with the entire post-conciliar NUChurch in which FrancisChurch subsists.

Special Saturday edition.

It would appear that Western Civilization is on the cusp of a massive Catholic revival. This revival is being brought about by social media and the ready access to information that appears on the various platforms. This information in turn, has initiated a “discernment” PROCESS which is attracting non-Catholics and fallen away Catholics back to the ONE TRUE FAITH.

The signs are everywhere…

Reading the Catholic Herald yesterday, I ran across their post about Lizzie Reezay. (see here) Now Lizzie was the young lady that converted to Catholicism from the Church of Christ protestant sect, and the one that your humble blogger featured in the post titled New Convert Lizzie Answers Why FrancisChurch Is A Dying Sect…

In that Catholic Herald post, there was another conversion case presented, this one of Elena Attfield. Here is how she was presented:

Elena Attfield, a postgraduate student at LSE (London School of Economics). As an Evangelical, Attfield used Facebook and Instagram to share the Gospel, “and Catholics were a prime target”. But when some Catholics reached out to her, her perspective began to change.

But the best part of her story was her OBSERVATION that I have used in the screen grab of the Tweet that I have placed at the top of this post.

So hold that thought…

A few positions higher, we can see another Catholic Herald post, but this one a rather disappointing post, about Dr. Jordan Peterson. Unfortunately, the typical calumny is spread about Dr. Peterson’s work by the author. However, it is still worth reading since it demonstrates an interesting fallacious argument used against Dr. Peterson.

Specifically, while recognizing that the end goal of Dr. Peterson is to discern what is objectively TRUE, the author then goes on to criticize Dr. Peterson’s criticism of political correctness, which is by it’s very definition NOT TRUE.

Or as Mrs. Attfield would say: ERRONIOUS.

In other words, the ideology of political correctness was invented because it’s adherant can’t handle that which is OBJECTIVELY TRUE.

The term “political correctness” is just the contemporary form of what is known as SOLIPSICM (a theory holding that the self can know nothing but its own modifications and that the self is the only existent thing; also : extreme egocentrism). The downstream effect of a solipsistic mindset, when encountering external REALITY is that it leads to what is know as “magical thinking“, which denotes the fallacious attribution of causal relationships between actions and events.

In a nutshell, magical thinking is:

“… the belief that one’s thoughts by themselves can bring about effects in the world or that thinking something corresponds with doing it. (…), the belief can cause a person to experience fear, seemingly not rationally justifiable to an observer outside the belief system, of performing certain acts or having certain thoughts because of an assumed correlation between doing so and threatening calamities.

If we were to provide examples of this “solipsistic magic thinking” known as “political correctness”  that can be OBSERVED in day to day life, one great example would be the disconnect between that which is written by Mrs Attfield above, i.e. that it was the “non-ecumenism” of Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus that attracted her to the Catholic Faith, and that which appears below: (see here)

4) What did the Pope say about converting people?

Early in the interview, the following exchange occurs:

The Pope smiles and says: “Some of my colleagues who know you [Scalfari] told me that you will try to convert me [to atheism].”

It’s a joke I tell him. My friends think it is you [the Pope] want to convert me [to Christianity].

He smiles again and replies: “Proselytism is solemn nonsense, it makes no sense. We need to get to know each other, listen to each other and improve our knowledge of the world around us.”

Can’t make this stuff up folks.

But there is a deeper problem that people from the Novus Ordo sect have with objective Truth. The problem that they have with objective Truth is that it demolishes their entire post-conciliar “new springtime of the spirit of VII” PARADIGM”

If we start from the premise that the entire Second Vatican Council was called to introduce a false ecumenism into the Bride of Christ, (which it was) then we see why the Novus Ordo sectarians have a problem with capital “T” Truth.

Case in point, how can one claim that NUChurch has attractivistic capabilities when Elena Attfield’s conversion happened on the premise that the “spirit of VII” ecumenism is solemn nonsense?

Here is the proof, as seen by a heretic: (see here)

One of the most controversial texts in all of the documents of Vatican II is that of article 8 of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen gentium). The church “subsists in” the Catholic church, rather than “is” the Catholic church, as the earlier text had it.

It is this logical fallacy that opened the door for universalism, or the doctrine held especially by some Christian groups that all people will eventually be saved. I.e. the Bishop Barron position.

Yet as we know ontologically, and what Mrs. Attfield confirmed: “pro multi”, not “pro omnes”.

So what we see here is a logical contradiction. This ERROR introduced by the “pastoral council” breaks with the Laws of Thought, which are defined here:

The laws of thought are fundamental axiomatic rules upon which rational discourse itself is often considered to be based. The formulation and clarification of such rules have a long tradition in the history of philosophy and logic. Generally they are taken as laws that guide and underlie everyone’s thinking, thoughts, expressions, discussions, etc. However such classical ideas are often questioned or rejected in more recent developments, such as intuitionistic logic, dialetheism and fuzzy logic.

And even if these classical ideas are “questioned” in specific technical fields, they appear to hold as universal principles that have an attractivistic capacity.

And since we are on the subject of “attractivistic capacity”, no better support for this presupposition can be had than this lede passage from the Dr. Peterson post of the Catholic Herald:

Jordan Peterson’s two-and-a-half hour lecture entitled “Introduction to the Idea of God” has been viewed nearly 1.6 million times in the nine months it has been online. That’s more than three times as many views as the most popular video by the Church’s biggest Anglophone social media star, Bishop Robert Barron—and that clip is a bite-sized nine minutes and was published six years ago. How is a devotee of anti-Christian thinkers like Friedrich Nietzsche and Carl Jung outdrawing Catholic prelates in the media marketplace for Christian theology?

The answer to that question is easy: Dr. Jordan’s Christian quality content of his videos is by far superior to that of the NUChurch’s Fr. Barron.

Another way to restate the above is as follows: the quality content is higher because Dr. Peterson’s material has a greater positive correlation to that which is objectively true then that which is produced by Fr. Barron.

And it would appear that the higher the Objective Truth content of any material, the better that content can provide MEANING for the content recipient.

There’ s that word again…

Nota bene: That word even made a cameo appearance in the recent Placuit Deo Letter of the CDF.

Anyone catch it?

And just to support the above observation, I have produced three other videos below that I have picked randomly off of the YouTube Channel when I entered the term “Catholic Conversion”.

This was the first time I have watched any of these individuals, and to be perfectly honest, I am blown away. It would appear that there are basic universal themes which were responsible for these people to convert to Catholicism. One is the Real Presence (so much for the protestantized mass of Paul VI), while another is the systematic rationality and logical structure of the Catholic Faith itself. Not to mention the Traditional Latin Mass. It would appear that the Catholic Faith can attract different people on different levels all depending on their own personal God given abilities, attributes and interests.

Here are the three videos: one from a former Mormon, one from Reformed Protestantism and one from an Atheist. Please watch an compare to the material presented in Lizzie’s Reezay’s video and see for yourselves the common features between these four conversion stories.

And one final thought. The next Roman Pontiff should create a dicastry to examine this conversion PHENOMENON and promote it actively. This course of action would be much more beneficial for the Church then promoting deviant sexual behaviour and political extremism among the young and vulnerable.

It would also appear that there is a great hunger for Catholicism which can not only help many people establish MEANING in their personal lives, but can by default fill up the Churches and Seminaries very fast!

But in order for this to happen, the “new springtime of the spirit of VII” and the homo-heresy PARADIGM must be overcome.

*****

The Atheist – This is my favorite video. Leah used her mathematical background to discern that Catholicism is the ONE TRUE FAITH.

Reformed Protestant – The power of the Real Presence!

Morman – More Real Presence and Catholic Priesthood!

francsi-at-unThis just came across my radar. Over at the “c”atholic website ZeroHedge, the proprietor, one Tyler Durden (nom de plume) has commentary about the Francis speech given to the Italian journalists. I have republished it below, but the original can be seen here.

The reason that I am posting this material is due to an observation that a consensus is forming among writers and bloggers whose main focus is on the ECONOMIC sector of the Visibislium Omnium, et Invisibilium, and its sub-set of monetary/fiscal policy and the financial markets in general.

The consensus that is forming is that Francis is an integral part of the Agenda 21 plan launched by the United Nations in order to create a ONE WORLD ORDER with a ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT including a ONE WORLD RELIGION.

And it is exactly this issue that we addressed in the post from last Wednesday titled The Bishops Really Need To Start Speaking Out About This… (see here) In that post, we observed that numerous writers and blogger, from the secular part of God’s creation are also sounding the warning about what Francis is up to.

And what Francis is up to has nothing to do with the welfare of the Catholic Church in general nor in particular: the salvation of souls.

This above is in line with the numerous letters and petitions for clarification that have already appeared from the Catholic world addressed to Francis, the bishop of Rome. The latest and by far the most comprehensive being written by Michael Matt, Christopher Ferrara, John Vennari, and appearing simultaneously at The Remnant and Catholic Family News is the Liber Accusationis “With Burning Concern”. Messers Matt, Ferrara, Vennari have published, in three parts an Open Accusation Against Francis

Part I:

With Burning Concern: We Accuse Pope Francis: The Remnant & Catholic Family News – I of III (see here)

Part II:

With Burning Concern: We Accuse Pope Francis Part II (see here)

Part III:

With Burning Concern: We Accuse Pope Francis: The Remnant & Catholic Family News – III of III (see here)

Once again, it needs to be stressed that it is of CRITICAL IMPORTANCE AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME, for the Bishops of the HOLY ROMAN CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH to start speaking up about this situation that is quickly spinning out of control.

The republication below is just more OBJECTIVE confirmation of just this FACT.

FOR THE RECORD

Pope Slams Rumor–Mongers, Journalists As “Potential Weapons Of Mass Destruction”

Doing nothing to dispel chatter of a papal push for a utopian totalitarian nightmare, Pope Francis seemed to suggest that freedom of speech was over-rated in an address he gave this week. Media that stereotype entire populations (like ‘Deplorables’?) and journalist fear-mongers are akin to “terrorists,” according to Pope.

As the first ever Pope to address a joint session of Congress, he took some shots at the structural evils of free market capitalism and the unequal distribution of wealth. As early as 2013, when he penned his Apostolic Exhortation, in which he laid out his broad vision for the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has been clarifying his positions on these topics.

With the subsequent release of his controversial encyclical on global warming in June 2015, he established two pressing themes that monopolized his visit.

Climate change was the focus of his address to the UN General Assembly on September 25, as he kicked off the 2015 UN Summit on Sustainable Development and its seventeen-point utopian agenda for the entire planet, packaged in a thinly disguised reboot of Agenda 21. According to IPS news:

“Judging by his recent public pronouncements – including on reproductive health, biodiversity, the creation of a Palestinian state, the political legitimacy of Cuba and now climate change – Pope Francis may upstage more than 150 world leaders when he addresses the United Nations, come September… The Pope will most likely be the headline-grabber, particularly if he continues to be as outspoken as he has been so far.”

Along the way, he has managed to stun even many Catholics with pronouncements about issues that they think should be none of his business. And now, as Reuters reports, Pope Francis appears to be aiming his papal power at press freedom of speech…

Journalism based on gossip or rumors is a form of “terrorism” and media that stereotype entire populations or foment fear of migrants are acting destructively, Pope Francis said on Thursday.

Francis, who made his comments in an address to leaders of Italy‘s national journalists’ guild, said reporters had to go the extra mile to seek the truth, particularly in an age of round-the-clock news coverage.

Spreading rumors is an example of “terrorism, of how you can kill a person with your tongue”, he said. “This is even more true for journalists because their voice can reach everyone and this is a very powerful weapon.”…

Francis, who has often strongly defended the rights of refugees and migrants, said journalism should not be used as a “weapon of destruction against persons and even entire peoples”.“

Neither should it foment fear before events like forced migration from war or from hunger,” he added.

As was discussed previously, this is another concept taken from the “Apostolic Exhortation” handbook; some suggest it sounds like a call for a revolution.

Pope Francis undoubtedly knows that some of these ideas are not likely to go over as well in the United States as they did in Latin America. Especially as the US Election exposes the disgusting bias in mainstream media. According to the New York Times noted last year,

“As his papal jetliner was returning to Rome (from his recent visit to South America), Francis signaled that he knew his economic message was already facing criticism in the United States and pledged to study it. Some critics blame him for rebuking capitalism with an unduly broad brush. Others say he ignores that globalization has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty.”

The Pope also knows, however, that the UN has strong-armed member nations to sign on to an impossible globalist agenda that will require a total shift of the world’s wealth, and a restructuring of international politics and economics with a one-world government and a universal religion at the steering wheel. Even to the Pope’s admirers, that sounds a less like peace and love and more like a utopian totalitarian nightmare.

On the 1st day of April, Francis gave to me… a SSPX Roman seminary!

FOR THE RECORD

Pope to extend validity of confessions of SSPX priests beyond Year of Mercy

Several thousand people were assembled in Puy-en-Velay (Haute-Loire) during the pilgrimage organized this weekend by the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X on the occasion of the jubilee year celebrated in  this Mecca of Christendom. During the Mass celebrated Saturday in St. Paulien, Father Christian Bouchacourt, District Superior of France, said that this pilgrimage constituted a prayer for (France). He noted that many saints are linked to this holy place (Joan of Arc, Louis-Marie Grignon de Montfort, John Francis Regis, etc.) and urged the faithful to recite the Angelus  every day for Muslims so they can know, love and serve Jesus Christ. […]

Bishop Bernard Fellay, superior general of the SSPX,  celebrated the Mass for Good Shepherd Sunday with his two Assistants General.

A few days earlier he had met with Pope Francis during a very positive meeting which strengthened ties between the Holy See and the Society founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. Despite the publication of the Post-Synodal Exhortation, which “makes us cry,” he revealed some “happiness” from the interview

  • The Pope confirmed that the SSPX was Catholic in his eyes
  • He confirmed that he never would condemn it
  • He confided that he wishes to expand the faculties of the SSPX, starting with the authorization of its priests to validly hear confession.

Finally, during the talks in Rome, Bishop Fellay was encouraged to establish a seminary in Italy.

Neo-modernist cleric?

The neo-modernist priesthood?

As I wrote in my previous post The Negative Theology of Francis (see here), reaction to the Messori article was swift and vicious. (see here) The Italian Aleteia blog among others, carried a story with several critical voices from the lunatic fringe of conciliar Rio de Janeiro Rome. (see here) The part that grabbed my attention was the criticism of Messori and the article he wrote, provided by Leonardo Boff. To get a feel for Boff, for the uninitiated reader, please see here and here. My observation of the Boff criticism of Messori is below.

Furthermore, the Boff criticism is a perfect example of the what occurred when the Catholic Church deposed Thomism as its underlying philosophy of Catholic formation in favor of neo-modernism during the Second Vatican Council. The John Lamont essay at Rorate Caeli provides the detail. I highly recommend a thorough reading of this text. (see here).

So let’s get to it, but a word of warning first, this post is a long one. To save some time, one can glance over the fallacy list section and return to it at a later time. It really is not mission critical to the storyline. But the conclusion is worth the effort. In my humble opinion, of course.

Introduction

What is most interesting about the Boff response to the Messori article is that it demonstrates the point quite aptly made by John Lamont in his essay titled Attacks on Thomism. Here is the relevant passage: (emphasis added)

Stated thus plainly, the neomodernist position is rightly seen as absurd by most people; but it was not stated plainly – for obvious reasons – in neomodernist polemics. Garrigou-Lagrange’s contribution was to see and to prove that this was what the neomodernists believed, and to disprove the philosophical basis for their position. He pointed out that their understanding of truth leads to the denial of the principle of non-contradiction, which means intellectual suicide.

The intellectual suicide is clearly visible through the destruction of the post-conciliar church, especially in South America. This destruction was brought about through:

Neomodernism, however, on a religious level is a purely negative thesis. As a result it has no attractive force of its own, and ecclesiastical structures that fall into its grip eventually die away – a process now visible all over the world.

A good case in point is the situation in Ciudad del Este contrasted with the rest of the Church in Paraguay or the diocese of Frejus-Toulon contrasted with the rest of France. But I digress…

The causality between adopting the neo-modernist heresy and the dying ecclesiastical structures that adopted it is attributed to:

This propaganda is thus aimed not only at Thomism, but at philosophy itself, and the opponents of Thomism were only able to make use of it because they were not interested in philosophy. They would use philosophical claims to advance their agenda, but they proposed no general philosophical alternative to Thomism. They offered no account of central topics of philosophy – time, space, cause, universal and particular, body, soul, perception, and the like – to replace the Thomist accounts they had banished.

And it is this lack of universality, i.e. the continuous relevance of central philosophical concepts regardless of “time, space, cause, universal and particular, body , soul, perception” etc. which make neo-modernist heresy worthless as a transcendental philosophy and irrelevant to understanding anything beyond a particular occurrence at a particular point in time, if that. In other words, neo-modernism is nothing more than a “disposable form of emotionalism” disguised as “theology”. In this sense, it is no different than the “theology” that is practiced by the gentlemen in the picture above.

Here’s the proof.

Reaction from the peripheries

The above mentioned “intellectual suicide” of the post conciliar “theological” class can be easily witnessed reading Boff’s critique of Messari. Furthermore, if there ever was a better example of what can be termed as a Verrecchian “pseudosacral homopoetic” rhetoric, it would be very hard to find a better example than the one below. (see here)

But as to the task at hand, I will provide a translation of the Boff paragraphs from the Aleteia blog below. Since they are translations, I have provided a link above for cross reference.

Aleteia Blog provides us with the Leonardo Boff criticism of Messori:

ABSENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

On noisiamochiesa.org, the Brazilian theologian Leonardo Boff, has slapped Messori hard, noting “two theological shortcomings.” The first: “The near absence of the Holy Spirit. I will say more, shortcomings which incurs the cristomonismo theological error, that is, Christ alone counts. There is not really a place for the Holy Spirit. Everything in the Church is resolved with only Christ which the Jesus of the Gospels did not exactly want. Why do I say this? Because what he regrets is the “unpredictability” of the pastoral action of this Pope. Well, this is the characteristic of the Spirit, its unpredictability, as St. John says: “The Spirit blows where it will, listen to his voice, however, do not know where it comes from or where it goes towards “(3.8). Its nature is the sudden irruption with his gifts and charisms. Francis of Rome in the footsteps of Francis of Assisi is led by the Spirit.

BLASPHEMOUS ANALYSIS

Messori, said Boff, “is held hostage by a linear vision, his own” beloved Joseph Ratzinger “and other earlier Popes. Unfortunately, it was this vision that has made the Church a citadel, unable to understand the complexity of the modern world, isolated in the midst of other Churches and their spiritual paths, without dialogue and learning from each other, they are also enlightened by the Spirit. It means to be blasphemous against the Holy Spirit to think that what others have thought that it is just wrong. For this is supremely important, as the Church wants to be opened by Francis of Rome. “

RELIGION OF THE THIRD WORLD

The second “failure”. “I do not have the size of the fact that today Christianity is a religion of the Third World as highlighted many times the German theologian Johan Baptist Metz. Europe is home to only 25% of Catholics; the 72.56% live in the Third World (in Latin America 48.75%). Why cannot one come to terms that from this one majority, the Spirit made him bishop of Rome and Pope universal? Why not accept the innovations that result from these churches, which are not in the image of the old European churches but new churches with their martyrs, confessors and theologians? “.

And this is what passes for “intellectual” theological criticism in today’s post conciliar church.

Furthermore, just a simple reading of the three above paragraphs, I have identified no less than 41 logical fallacies.

Forty one identified logical fallacies in just three paragraphs.

So now that we have read the above criticism of Mr. Boff, what should we make of it?

One thing that becomes apparent from the reading of the first couple of sentence is that Mr. Boff has a problem with logically constructing his thoughts. To be more precise, his criticism of Messori’s article is brimming with logical fallacies. And why is it important to not only identify but understand these errors of logic? Because the ability to identify logical fallacies in the arguments of others, and to avoid them in one’s own arguments, allows us to think critically. And critical thinking protects us from being manipulated. (Too many critically thinking bishops at the Secret Synod of 2014 and see what happened?) Furthermore, logical fallacies hinders us from identifying and understanding “objective truth”, since “objective truth” by definition is devoid of falsehood, and therefore by extension, devoid of logical fallacies.

Or to put it another way, argument containing logical fallacies are for the most part “non-sensical” and therefore fall into the category of “gibberish”.

So let’s get cracking.

By the way, the official reference guide of this blog is the Stephen’s Guide to Logical Fallacies whose link can be found in the right hand margin of the Deus Ex Machina blog.

Here is the identified logical fallacy list to wit: [with ed. notes]

Appeal to Pity: the reader is persuaded to agree by sympathy – “Why not accept the innovations that result from these [third world] churches, which are not in the image of the old European churches but new churches with their martyrs, confessors and theologians? “

Prejudicial Language: value or moral goodness is attached to believing the author– “Everything in the Church is resolved with only Christ [in Messori’s mind], which the Jesus of the Gospels did not exactly want”.

Popularity: a proposition is argued to be true because it is widely held to be true – “Europe is home to only 25% of Catholics; the 72.56% live in the Third World (in Latin America 48.75%). Why cannot one come to terms that from this one majority, the Spirit made him bishop of Rome and Pope universal?”

Attacking the Person -the person’s character is attacked – “Messori, said Boff, “is held hostage by a linear vision, his own” beloved Joseph Ratzinger “and other earlier Popes.” or “[Messori has] The near absence of the Holy Spirit.” or “[Messori has] shortcomings which incurs the cristomonismo theological error”.

Anonymous Authority: the authority in question is not named – “I will say more, shortcomings which incurs the cristomonismo theological error that is, Christ alone counts”. Who defined this “error”?

Style Over Substance: the manner in which an argument (or arguer) is presented is felt to affect the truth of the conclusion. – “Unfortunately, it was this vision [Messori’s] that has made the Church a citadel, unable to understand the complexity of the modern world, isolated in the midst of other Churches and the spiritual, without dialogue and learn from each other, they are also enlightened by the Spirit.”

Hasty Generalization: the sample is too small to support an inductive generalization about a population – “Why not accept the innovations that result from these [evangelical Pentecostal] churches?” i.e. those churches which fall into the population between the Catholic population and the general population of Latin America, i.e. the 51.25% “[Catholics in Latin America are 48.75%]”. The fallacy is due to the situation where those non-Catholic churches could be losing faithful outside of Latin America at an equal or even faster rate. The proper population sample would be to see how the growth of the evangelical Pentecostal population is performing when compared to the growth of the general population globally.

Unrepresentative Sample: the sample is unrepresentative of the sample as a whole- Same as Hasty Generalization.

False Analogy: the two objects or events being compared are relevantly dissimilar– Same as Hasty Generalization. The events being compared are: introducing novelties v. population size of churches with those novelties.

Slothful Induction: the conclusion of a strong inductive argument is denied despite the evidence to the contrary – “Its [Holy Spirit’s] nature is the sudden irruption with his gifts and charisms.” Any gifts and charisms given to the Catholic Church post VII would provide a strong inductive argument to the contrary, case in point the FFI or the diocese of Ciudad del Este.

Fallacy of Exclusion: evidence which would change the outcome of an inductive argument is excluded from consideration. Same as Slothful Induction or the demographic data for evangelical Pentecostals globally relative to the general population that would be the correct metric, but provide different result.

Accident: a generalization is applied when circumstances suggest that there should be an exception – Same as Fallacy of Exclusion. The generalization is that the evangelical Pentecostals are prospering when there should be an exception made because the Catholic Church is in fact self destructing.

Converse Accident : an exception is applied in circumstances where a generalization should apply. – same as Accident since we are applying the exception of evangelical performance in South America when the generalization is that all religions are losing members collectively.

Post Hoc: because one thing follows another, it is held to cause the other– “Why not accept the innovations that result from these churches, which are not in the image of the old European churches but new churches with their martyrs, confessors and theologians? “. Because these innovations are not from European Churches does not necessarily mean that they are not being accepted.

Joint effect: one thing is held to cause another when in fact they are both the joint effects of an underlying cause – Same as Post Hoc. The rise of the evangelical Pentecostals is not caused by their innovations, but rather it is the destruction of the Catholic Church that is causing the increase in numbers in South America.

Insignificant: one thing is held to cause another, and it does, but it is insignificant compared to other causes of the effect – Same as Joint Effect. The innovations are an insignificant issue with respect to the increase in evangelical Pentecostalism.

Wrong Direction: the direction between cause and effect is reversed– Again same as Joint Effect and Insignificant. It is not the innovations that are causing the Catholics to go to the evangelical Protestants, but rather the Catholic innovations (i.e. liberation theology, breakdown is theological discipline, etc.) that is pushing the Catholics out of the Church.

Complex Cause: the cause identified is only a part of the entire cause of the effect – Same as last three. That the Catholics are leaving in droves is more complex than just the innovations of the Pentecostals.

Begging the Question: the truth of the conclusion is assumed by the premises – “Messori”, said Boff, “is held hostage by a linear vision, his own” beloved Joseph Ratzinger “and other earlier Popes.” is being begged by “Unfortunately, it was this vision that has made the Church a citadel, unable to understand the complexity of the modern world isolated in the midst of other Churches and the spiritual paths, without dialogue and learn from each other they are also enlightened by the Spirit.”

Irrelevant Conclusion: an argument in defense of one conclusion instead proves a different conclusion – “Its [Holy Spirit’s] nature is the sudden irruption with his gifts and charisms.” proves that the Holy Spirit abandoned the post-conciliar church.

Straw Man: the author attacks an argument different from (and weaker than) the opposition’s best argument – The first: “The near absence of the Holy Spirit. I will say more, shortcomings which incurs the cristomonismo theological error, that is, Christ alone counts. There is not really a place for the Holy Spirit. [in Messori’s mind] Everything in the Church is resolved with only Christ, which the Jesus of the Gospels did not exactly want.” What’s there left to say about this gem?

Equivocation: the same term is used with two different meanings – This definition of the Holy Spirit:  “ It means to be blasphemous against the Holy Spirit to think that others have thought that are just wrong” is not the same as this Holy Spirit: “ Its [Holy Spirit’s] nature is the sudden irruption with his gifts and charisms. “

Composition: because the attributes of the parts of a whole have a certain property, it is argued that the whole has that property – Because the evangelical Protestants are increasing in numbers in South America, it does not follow that this is true globally and that their innovations should be copied.

Division: because the whole has a certain property, it is argued that the parts have that property – Same as Composition.

Affirming the Consequent: any argument of the form: If A then B, B, therefore A – IF “ Europe is home to only 25% of Catholics; the 72.56% live in the Third World (in Latin America 48.75%) THEN “Christianity is a religion of the Third World”, “Christianity being the religion of the Third World”, THEREFORE “Why not accept the innovations that result from these churches which are not in the image of the old European churches but new churches with their martyrs, confessors and theologians?”

Denying the Antecedent: any argument of the form: If A then B, Not A, thus Not B – IF “I will say more, shortcomings which incurs the cristomonismo theological error , that is, Christ alone counts” THEN “There is not really a place for the Holy Spirit”, (NOT A) “Everything in the Church is resolved with only Christ [in Messori’s mind], which the Jesus of the Gospels did not exactly want”, THUS (NOT B) “Its [Holy Spirit’s] nature is the sudden irruption with his gifts and charisms”.

Inconsistency: asserting that contrary or contradictory statements are both true -“The near absence of the Holy Spirit. I will say more, shortcomings which incurs the cristomonismo theological error, that is, Christ alone counts”. IF Christ alone counts, there cannot be a “near absence of anything else”. There has to be a total absence of anything else.

Undistributed Middle: two separate categories are said to be connected because they share a common property – “Why not accept the innovations that result from these churches”, The Catholic Church and the evangelical Pentecostals are the two separate categories.

Fallacy of Exclusive Premises: a syllogism has two negative premises –“The near absence of the Holy Spirit” (Minor Premise), “I will say more, shortcomings which incurs the cristomonismo theological error, that is, Christ alone counts” (Major Premise) does not allow one to draw the conclusion of a disruption of ” Its [Holy Spirit’s] nature is the sudden irruption with his gifts and charisms”. Since important evidence which would undermine an inductive argument is excluded from consideration such as the FFI were enjoying gifts and charisms, but definitely would be considered in the “cristomonismo” camp.

Fallacy of Drawing an Affirmative Conclusion From a Negative Premise: as the name implies Messori… “is held hostage by a linear vision, it was this vision that has made the Church a citadel, unable to understand the complexity of the modern world, isolated in the midst of other Churches and the spiritual paths , without dialogue and learn from each other”, THEREFORE “For this is supremely important as the Church wants to be open by Francis of Rome”.

Existential Fallacy: a particular conclusion is drawn from universal premises– “The Catholic Church is a Church, “the Holy Spirit’s nature is the sudden irruption with his gifts and charisms” . THEREFORE The Holy Spirit provides a “sudden irruption of gifts and charisms” to all Churches. Besides “It means to be blasphemous against the Holy Spirit to think that others have thought that are just wrong”.

Subverted Support The phenomenon being explained doesn’t exist – “Unfortunately, it was this vision that has made the Church a citadel, unable to understand the complexity of the modern world, isolated in the midst of other Churches and their spiritual paths, without dialogue and learning from each other, they are also enlightened by the Spirit.” This situation hasn’t existed in the Catholic Church since 1963.

Non-support Evidence for the phenomenon being explained is biased – “Europe is home to only 25% of Catholics; the 72.56% live in the Third World (in Latin America 48.75%). Why cannot one come to terms that from this one majority, the Spirit made him bishop of Rome and Pope universal?” Because South America is not a majority without the third world.

Untestability The theory which explains cannot be tested– “There is not really a place for the Holy Spirit. Everything in the Church is resolved with only Christ which the Jesus of the Gospels did not exactly want.” How does one test what “ Jesus of the Gospel did not exactly want”?

Limited Depth The theory which explains does not appeal to underlying causes – “The near absence of the Holy Spirit. I will say more, shortcomings which incurs the cristomonismo theological error, that is, Christ alone counts. There is not really a place for the Holy Spirit”. A theory presented as a fact with no explicit substantiation of the underlying cause of the alleged “absence of the Holy Spirit”.

Fallacies of Definition –  “I will say more, shortcomings which incurs the cristomonismo theological error”. Error has a specific meaning in Catholic theology. Here Boff wittingly transforms a “shortcoming” into an “error”.

Too Broad The definition includes items which should not be included – “I will say more, shortcomings which incurs the cristomonismo theological error”. “Cristomonismo” when defined as “error” is a false definition.

Too Narrow The definition does not include all the items which should be included – “Well, this is the characteristic of the Spirit, its unpredictability, as St. John says: “The Spirit blows where it will, listen to his voice, however, do not know where it comes from or where it goes towards “(3.8)”. The Holy Spirit has many more characteristics. Just because one of his characteristics is observed, does not prove that it is the work of the Holy Spirit.

Failure to Elucidate The definition is more difficult to understand than the word or concept being defined- “ as St. John says: “The Spirit blows where it will, listen to his voice, however, do not know where it comes from or where it goes towards “(3.8). Its nature is the sudden irruption with his gifts and charisms. Francis of Rome in the footsteps of Francis of Assisi is led by the Spirit.” – Holy Spirit is more difficult to understand due to “blows where it will, listen to his voice, however, do not know where it comes from or where it goes towards”. So what Mr. Buff is implying is that we just have to take his word for it, that what he observes is the work of the Holy Spirit.

Circular Definition The definition includes the term being defined as a part of the definition– “The near absence of the Holy Spirit. I will say more, shortcomings which incur the cristomonismo theological error, that is, Christ alone counts. It would appear that the term “cristiomonismo” means “Christ alone counts”. Therefore, a restatement of this sentence would be as follows: “I will say more, shortcomings which incur the “Christ alone counts” theological error, that is, Christ alone counts”.

Conflicting Conditions The definition is self-contradictory – “The near absence of the Holy Spirit. I will say more, shortcomings which incurs the cristomonismo theological error, that is, Christ alone counts.” If Christ alone counts, then by definition there can be no “near absence”. There has to be total absence.

Forty One identified in total!

Leaves one to wonder what was being taught at those Franciscan seminaries in Brazil in the early 1960’s.

Summa Summarum

The reason that we went through this rather lengthy exercise is to demonstrate the “quality” of the arguments of the typical neo-modernist. The danger of using arguments littered with logical fallacies is that it consigns those arguments to the category of speech that is defined as gibberish. Once again, the definition of gibberish is:

Gibberish or gobbledygook refer to speech or other use of language that is nonsense, or that appears to be nonsense. It may include speech sounds that are not actual words, or forms such as language games or highly specialized jargon that seems non-sensical to outsiders. Gibberish should not be confused with literary nonsense such as that used in the poem “Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll.

The word gibberish is more commonly applied to speech, while gobbledygook (sometimes gobbledegook, gobbledigook or gobbledegoo) is more often applied to writing. “Officialese”, “legalese”, or “bureaucratese” are forms of gobbledygook. The related word jibber-jabber refers to rapid talk that is difficult to understand.

And it is this non-sensical language that demonstrates the non-sensical underlying philosophy or the lack there of, that manifests itself in what the Vocogno Community observed in its newsletter (see here) :

The popular neo-modernism of today (of a very low level) has introduced this gap, and for this many say that it is important [just] to live well; it doesn’t matter how or what you believe and doctrine isn’t so important. In the life of the Church today, there is a disdain for Doctrine, which favors [personal] experience of faith: but how can you have a real experience of God, if, disdaining Doctrine it is reduced to living “religious things” unmoored from God’s Revelation?

You can “un-moor” God’s Revelation from Doctrine, but only if your religion is similar to that of the gentlemen pictured at the beginning of this post. But I digress…

And this above observation lies at the root of the underlying cause of what John Lamont described in his essay:

The key to the neomodernist capture of power is however also the reason for their failure to sustain a religious culture. Neomodernism is not like Protestantism, which contains ideas with a positive content as well as being a rejection of Catholicism. These ideas – justification by faith, and the like – are not correct, but they say something substantial, and have an appeal that can give rise to an important movement. Neomodernism, however, on a religious level is a purely negative thesis. As a result it has no attractive force of its own, and ecclesiastical structures that fall into its grip eventually die away – a process now visible all over the world.

Which brings me to conclude the following. The fascination that Bergoglio and the neo-modernists have with evangelical Pentecostalism is likely grounded in the fact that since their neo-modernist theology is a purely negative thesis, with no attractive force of its own, and the adaptation of this negative theology is causing the death of their ecclesiastical structure, they are probably being attracted to the evangelical Pentecostalism due to its “positive” i.e. “attractivistic contents”. (There really is such a word.) These Pentecostal ideas are not correct, but at least they say something substantial. Or in the worst case scenario, Pentecostalism says something more substantial than neo-modernism.

From the Lamont essay, it would appear that some substance is better than no substance.

Especially if it helps you and your friends keep your day jobs.

Besides, being a neo- holy man beats flipping burgers at the local Mickey D’s!

Just ask Leonardo Boff.

Ecumenism: The Great De-Commission

Commenting on the post Silencing the Catholic Opposition (see here)], a friend of this blog, IndigusFamulus writes:

[Issues raised in the post are]… All at the heart of the crisis we face today in the Church, regarding the salvation of souls. We turn to Sacred Scripture, to shine the light of truth on all that is false about it.

By identifying the ends of ALL Catholic undertakings as the ‘salvation of souls’, IndignusFamulus explicitly anchors the “salvation of souls” as the objective of the Great Commission.

Just a quick reminder, the Great Commission is revealed to the followers of Christ in the Gospel of Matthew 28:16–20, where on a mountain in Galilee Jesus calls on his followers to baptize all nations in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This has been the mission of the Church as given to it by its Founder, and every generation since has understood it as such.

Every generation that is, until Jorge Bergoglio came onto the scene.

Sandro Magister has a post over at the Chiesa blog (see here) that illustrates another aspect of the bizarre behavior of Bergoglio. This bizarre behavior described in Magister’s post is exhibited by Bergoglio in his relations with the Evangelical community. The long and short of the matter is this, the Francis has a large need to be accepted by the Evangelicals, actually he has a weakness for them. jTo be more precise, Francis has a fascination in the manner in which they, shall we say, “exhibit their religiosity”. And I am trying to be quite charitable. To be honest, I am quite certain that Francis’s “theology done on the knees” is nothing more than Evangelical Pentecostalism (see here).

But be that as it may, Magister on the basis of the most recent Pew Research findings showing how the South American church has been losing Pew Sitters to the evangelicals (here) raises the following issue:

And it is therefore understandable that a pastor like Jorge Mario Bergoglio – who as an Argentine has experienced in person the collapse of Catholic membership in his country and on the continent – should wish to act accordingly.

Otherwise there is no explanation, in fact, for the incessant efforts that Pope Francis is undertaking with the world leaders of those “evangelical” and Pentecostal movements that in Latin America are the most fearful competitors of the Catholic Church. Not to fight them, but to make them his friends.

So what to make of this phenomenon?

Magister can’t make seem to answer this question either. Here is what he writes:

It is not clear how Francis might harmonize this vision of his with what is stated by the previous magisterium of the Church in matters of ecumenism. The fact is that he takes it greatly to heart, as emerges from the frequent informal talks that he gives to one or another of the “evangelical” pastors he encounters.

So how does Bergoglio justify his behavior? From a speech Francis gave to the leaders of the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches, Francis explained it this way:

We are sinning against the will of Christ, because we are looking only at the differences. But we all have the same baptism, and baptism is more important than the differences. We all believe in the Father, in the Son, and in the Holy Spirit. We all have within the Holy Spirit who prays, “now” for us, the spirit who prays in us.

With respect to the above, I don’t think there is a way to explain what in the wide wide world of sport it means.

And I don’t think the protestants know what in the wide wide world of sports it means either. Deus Ex Machina wrote a post titled “Francis v Logic, Logic Wins Again!” exactly on this topic. Without repeating what was said, we know that the protestants think rationally and what they think about his “theology don’t matter”message. (see here).

But they still come. And the question is why?

Once again: why do those pastors still accept Bergoglio’s invitations to those “frequent from the heart talks” with the evangelical pastors where he tells them stuff that they know is NONSENSE?

Well, here is what Magister writes with respect to the above question:

And the words that he says on these occasions, which never appear in the official Vatican sources, make the rounds when the recipients post them on the web, with evident satisfaction.

Yea, I bet they do.

The reason they come is that they use the authority of the bishop of Rome, and the words uttered by the bishop of Rome to attract more Faithful away from the Catholic Church and into their sects. Francis is the POSTER BOY for any sect that wants to attract followers away from the Holy Roman Catholic Church.

And the pastors of those sect don’t even have to tell their followers: “We told you so”.

One mug shot of Bergoglio tells the whole story.

T -198: Bishop of Rome v Logic. Logic wins. Again!

“Catholics and Evangelicals”

That The Bones You Have Crushed May Thrill blog has the story (link here).

TTBYHCMT Blog:(Reproduced with emphasis and comment)

Evangelicals have many strengths, among which in many communities is an obstinate refusal to revise the Word of God as they inherit it. They may not believe what Catholics believe about the Bible, but they do retain an insistence that their interpretation of the Word of God, does not simply change with the passage of time.

This is not starting out to good for the bishop of Rome.

Their beliefs cannot happily co-exist in a united Church without one group of Christians changing their entire belief system. In seeking union, the One True Church would require Evangelicals to accept Catholic doctrine regarding Sacraments (as well as other issues and dogmas), or instead the Evangelicals would require the One True Church to abandon Her Sacraments (and Her dogma).

Logic a 7 year old could understand. :)  Unless… that is…. we have a “magician” at our disposal! But I digress….

In order for ‘full communion’ to exist between the Catholic Church and Evangelicals, Evangelicals would need to accept the entire Doctrine of the Catholic Church and profess belief in it. Alternatively, the Catholic Church can jettison nearly 2,000 years of tradition and dogma and Her entire Faith and just become a Protestant Evangelical Alliance, but any Pope who sought to do that would be, well…words wouldn’t do that Pope justice. That would be the Protestant Reformation exploding the Church from within and from the top. Pope Francis may truly believe that an insistence on dogma is ‘in the way’ of much that he would like to see happen in terms of the Catholic Church’s response to a great deal, but if any Pope denies articles of Faith, Catholic Doctrine, that individual would traditionally be regarded as some kind of anti-pope figure, who should be resisted by the Faithful and ignored by everyone else.

Oh my! That sticky wicket “capitulation” rears its ugly head. Now we know Francis is against “capitulation.” ;)

And now for the punch line:

That said, as Gloria TV highlighted yesterday, even Baptists are asking some pretty eye-brow raising questions of Pope Francis…

No. Not Gloria TV! Say it ain’t so, Jorge? :)

Summa Summarum from TT:
The efficacy of the Christian announcement would certainly be greater if Christians would overcome their divisions and could celebrate together the Sacraments and together spread the Word of God and witness to charity” [Francis quote] [B/t/w Spot the DeM? ]. Either Pope Francis is calling upon Evangelicals and other Christians to accept the fullness of Catholic Truth and come into full communion with the Successor of St Peter or he is calling upon the Church to abandon Her Sacraments. Out of the two options, should any union occur, I know which one I suspect to be the case. I don’t know how many Evangelicals are into a poor church for the poor, but then neither is the German Catholic Church terribly keen on that aim. If the Catholic Church incorporated the Evangelical communities, that would, ironically, create a rich church for the rich. A poor church for the poor in the West is a Church faithful to Jesus Christ in times of unpopularity for that fidelity. Of course, the great sell-off of the Catholic religion would reap a healthy revenue indeed, but only at the price of total apostasy.

Yep! Call it a Mexican standoff or a binary situation, but one thing is for certain: it can’t be both.

B/t/w, this is one of the best analysis of the “ecumaniacal” folly of Francis that I have read to date.

And nicely tied in to the “economics of religion” theme.

Because, if you want to understand what Begoglio is up to, you have to “follow the money”.

And it’s plain for all to see. :)
